Each summer from May through August, something wondrous happens along our beaches: An ancient mariner, the loggerhead sea turtle, leaves the water during the night and crawls ashore to lay her eggs in a sandy nest. The task of excavating a nest may take her over an hour to accomplish. The turtle - weighing several hundred pounds - laboriously digs a nest cavity with her rear flippers.

Four Freedoms Park is home to one of the City’s most scenic and serene parks. Sitting on Bimini Basin, the park enjoys a full complement of shaded playground equipment, an outdoor amphitheater, several kiosks with picnic tables and barbecue grills, and a recreational building. Built in 1982, the Four Freedoms Park recreation center is a multi-purpose, 5,827 square foot facility. The center is home to a variety of classes, programs, and special events for children to adults.

For the walkers or hikers:
Upon arrival at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, stop in the visitor center to pick up a trail guide, use the facilities, check out the displays of local wildlife or gather information on park events before heading out on the trail. The original boardwalk has been extended to include an additional 1,000 feet of boardwalk from the observation stop at Four Mile Creek out to the cove where there is also a new pier overlooking the water and three remodeled shelters (only accessible by kayak or canoe).

Rotary Park is located off of Cape Coral Parkway, at the southern tip of Pelican Boulevard. Set on 197 acres, the facility offers a multitude of programs designed to please: gardening with native plants, landscape design, orchids, bromeliads, palms, herb gardening, plant propagation, woodcarving, basket weaving and exercise classes for all fitness levels to name a few. Two large native plant sales are held at the park each year (April & July), plus a gardening goods flea market in March of each year.

The Calusa Nature Center and planetarium is a private, not for profit, environmental education organization located in Fort Myers, Florida. Our 105 acre site has a museum, nature trails, planetarium, aviary, gift shop and meeting and picnic areas.
Strolling through our museum, visitors can learn about Southwest Florida's natural history. Daily educational programs allow visitors an up close and personal view of some of our resident creatures, including snakes, alligators and crocodiles.
